As of July 2018, and for a four-year period, all papers published in ACM Transactions on Architecture and Code Optimization (TACO) will be published as Gold Open Access (OA) and will be free to read and share via the ACM Digital Library.
To underwrite the publication costs for TACO as a Gold OA journal, authors are requested to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC). This APC is US$1,300 when at least one named author is an ACM member, or US$1,700 when none of the named authors are ACM members. In the event that an author is unable to pay the APC during the initial two-year period (July 1, 2018- June 30, 2020), ACM has established an OA fund to underwrite these fees. Beginning July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2022, all TACO authors will be asked to pay the APC utilizing research funding from their institution’s OA fund or out of the funds supporting their research. At the end of four years, the decision will be taken to continue TACO as a Gold OA journal or revert to the previous subscription-based model.
ACM is committed to exploring routes to making Gold OA publication both affordable and sustainable. For those authors financially unable to pay the APC as of 2020, ACM has developed a waiver program to ensure that no accepted articles to TACO go unpublished as a result of financial need.
